Excerpt:
Aidan Gordon clutched his wooden cup at the long, roughly hewn table, trying to ignore the wench's laughter where the woman threw herself at the dolt with coin two seats down the long bench, and thought about the way the dipping neckline of Elspeth's gown thrust her ample cleavage into view earlier in the day. Therein lay Truth this night, he decided. She is mine by all that is sacred. Ripe for the picking. And every Time Guardian knows fresh fruit to be an ephemeral delight tied to slivers of a single season. Time to harvest a soul mate.

"That distant look in your eyes troubles me, Aidan." Thomas stirred to the left, his voice barely a whisper over the undying murmur of the men-at-arms's end-of-day chatter. "It is true torture to pine for the Lord's Lady."

Lady? Rather whore. No decent man, no Brother who held all history in his grasp would take a wife and a mistress. That results in paradox. Better to die a lonely man than risk wedding a woman not wearing the cloth indicating she worked for The Orders. I glanced sideways at Thomas' speculative mask. "Fear not for a man with more intriguing tasks at hand, my friend."

Thomas blinked and leaned forward to gain a better view of the brunette wench and her chosen prey. "I say find a safer lass to bed." The chiding look the knight slid back was more than patronizing.

"I have survived many battles, Thomas. It seems only sensible that another awaits."

Thomas tilted his cup back, drained the wine, dropped the vessel, and wiped his yellow moustache with the back of his grimy hand. "You are no fool, my friend. And I have always preferred you nearby with trouble afoot. But, there can be no winning this joust. Leave the madness here at the table."

Madness? Aye. Soul mates come but once a lifetime. Maybe twice to a soul mate. And to sit back and watch one's soul mate be sexually abused by a Dark Ager is an act almost impossible to contemplate. The diseases. I gulped down a huge draught of that ugly reality. It was followed
by an equally hard lump of reality--risk of pregnancy and childbirth. What for? A powerful man's lusty whims? Elspeth deserves better than the sentence she was given.

Thomas leaned close. "At least, wait until he tires of her."

Share her?

My gut twisted.

Rather, I'd allow the act of violation to continue choosing that option.

"She differs little from the maid down the table, Aidan. 'Tis rumored Lady Wode already plans to dispense with the bothersome weed in her garden."
