Almost nothing Rina thinks she knows about her past is true. She believes she's an ordinary librarian whose parents and brother died in a car crash while she was in graduate school. So why does she have nightmares of her family's death from an earthquake in a strange city overrun by monsters?

When unearthly creatures attack Rina on her own front lawn, a stray cat comes to her rescue. To Rina's amazement, he turns out to be a shapechanger named Cam who can take the form of a mountain lion as well as a domestic cat. In human form, Cam tells Rina they came to this world from an alternate universe, where she was a sorceress who fought to protect her people from the creatures of the void. Her memories were changed for her own safety, and Cam, her bodyguard, followed her through the gate between worlds and has secretly kept watch over her.

Rina takes Cam for a liar or a lunatic until her true memories begin to awaken. With the help of Cam and her familiar, a butterfly disguised as a pendant she inherited from her mother, Rina fights back against the void spawn invading Earth through random interdimensional cracks. At the same time, she struggles against her reviving attraction to Cam, who was once her lover.

Eventually, they learn the source of the rifts in the fabric of reality -- a sorcerer pursuing Rina from their home world who plans to open a portal and summon powerful entities from the void between dimensions to ravage Earth. But can Rina and Cam, while coming to terms with their feelings for each other, stop the villain and save their new home from the fate that destroyed their old one?
