*EXCERPT*

She was so beautiful, so glorious and wonderful.

Solace smiled at him and held up one hand, touching his cheek with a gentle caress. Their eyes locked and Bastion gazed deep into her soul, seeing something loving and marvelous within. She was tiny--so much smaller than him, especially now--but she bridged the gap between them and stood up on her tiptoes, bringing her face closer to his. With a quiet, delicate daintiness to her action, she pressed her lips the barest amount against his.

Instantly, the heat near his mouth faded into a peppermint frost, slowly spreading out towards his cheeks and his nose and his neck. She backed away and continued to smile, continued to touch his face gently, continued watching him.

Deep inside his mind, scurrying to push away all his other thoughts, a hated idea struggled to the fore: What strength might he gain if he killed her? If a simple kiss from this beautiful maiden could douse the heat from his lips, how much cooler--more tempered? Perfected?--would he become if he bathed in her blood.

There was only one way to find out. Bastion, the Demon King, now in the form of a devilish monstrosity, raised his hand and swiped at the radiant creature before him, intending to kill her with one wretched rip from his darkened claws.
